| Key: red and grey= websites tracking you blue=websites that you have visited |
On the website TED there is a video that promotes and shows off an downloadable add on to firefox called Collusion that allows you to view how many websites are tracking you. At the beginning of the day after checking a few emails there is around 7 sites that are tracking you, this isn't very alarming but as the day goes on the number of sites increases alarmingly fast. By the end of the day Collusion looked like this. This wasn't even the most alarming factor, a 9 year old had visited all kid friendly websites and in 2 hours she had almost as many sites tracking her and she is only 9 years old. This could be compared to 30 people walking behind you following and memorizing your every move. The worst part is that we don't even know what they are doing with their information but they are making 39 billion dollars a year from what ever they do with our private information. As a user of the internet that gets onto 15 sites on average a day I could have anywhere from 20-30 websites following and taking my private information. Social media websites usually have the most sights tracking you. Although all of this is terrible it can be helpful, tracking ranges from saved passwords to recommended books and movie that you should watch with your family. Tracking and invading private informarion started in 1917 during WW1, the post office was able to read all information sent through the mail and could imprison and possibly kill you for conspiracy or sabotage.
I like your reasons that you listed for the negatives of websites tracking users.
